Let’s look into a paradox that trips almost everyone up at some point:
Belief is actually a Doubt, because you can only believe in what you don't know.
That sounds somehow a bit of a gibberish at first glance, doesn't it?. We usually think believing in something means we are 100% sold on it. But if you strip away the emotion and look at how human thinking actually works, a simple truth emerges clearly: you can only believe in what you don't truly know.
Think about it for a second. You never say, "I believe I have two hands and two legs," or "I believe the sun came up today." Except you're just being gross. You don't need to believe those things because you know them. They are direct, indisputable facts sitting right in front of you.
The moment you have to lean on the word "believe," you are silently acknowledging a gap in your direct experience or proof. And right inside that gap lies something called doubt.
It's actually dangerous to paddle Unquestioned Beliefs
When we treat our beliefs as absolute facts without ever testing them, a few sneaky things start happening behind the scenes:
- We Stop Asking Questions: Real growth happens when we stay curious. The moment you say "I believe X, and that is the end of it," your learning in that area comes to a complete halt.
- We Inherit Other People’s Mindsets: So many of our deepest beliefs aren't even ours. They are opinions, fears, and limits passed down to us by society, parents, or past experiences.
- We Build Fragile Confidence: If a belief is built on unexamined doubt, any opposing view feels like a personal attack. That is why people get so defensive when their core assumptions are challenged. For example a Christian believer will feel triggered if you told them that Jesus Christ may possibly not be coming back anytime soon. And a Moslem can go as far as violating the constitutional laws to fight you if you dare said Prophet Mohammed was just a human like every regular person who lived and died.
This is how to Test What You "Know".
If you want to build a truly solid, resilient mindset, you have to get comfortable auditing your own mind. Here are three simple steps to start questioning your assumptions today:
- Ask "How Do I Actually Know This?": Pick one strong opinion you hold about your career, your abilities, or the world. Ask yourself if it is based on direct personal experience or just something you picked up along the way.
- Look for the Hidden Doubt: If you feel an urge to aggressively defend a stance, pause and ask: "What am I afraid of discovering if this isn't true?"
- Trade Belief for Observation: Instead of clinging to fixed ideas about what you can or cannot achieve, adopt an experimental mindset. Try things out, gather real feedback, and let cold, hard results guide your next step.
Now Stack this up !
Doubt isn't your enemy, and questioning what you believe isn't a sign of weakness, it is the ultimate sign of intellectual maturity.
When you have the courage to question what you think you know, you clear out the stale assumptions making room for real clarity, genuine confidence, and unstoppable growth.
